Opening a bank account for a Hong Kong company is not governed by one universal checklist. Each bank sets its own account-opening procedures and carries out customer due diligence. This guide explains the main KYC questions, document categories, non-resident considerations and remote-opening options to check before applying.

## Key takeaways

- Each bank develops its own account-opening procedures, so an applicant should work from the selected bank's current requirements rather than a generic checklist.
- The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) states that an application should not be rejected merely because a corporate customer is established offshore or its directors or beneficial owners are non-residents. This does not guarantee approval.
- Banks must identify and take reasonable measures to verify beneficial owners, understand the ownership and control structure, and obtain information on the purpose of the account and expected banking activity.
- Remote opening is bank-specific. HSBC, for example, allows eligible customers to complete account opening remotely; other cases may involve an appointment or a video conference.
- Supporting documents and timing should be checked with the chosen bank. HSBC's own guidance notes that each bank has its own procedures and timings, and that documents vary by business type.

## Why Hong Kong Banks Do Not Use One Universal Opening Process

HKMA states that individual banks are required to develop their own account-opening procedures. Those procedures take into account the relevant legal and regulatory requirements, the Code of Banking Practice and each bank's own business strategy.

The information requested, the identity-verification route and the onboarding sequence can therefore differ between banks. A checklist taken from one bank should not be treated as the checklist for another. A company should choose its intended bank first, then work from that bank's current instructions.

A company not yet incorporated can start with Asomerit's [Hong Kong incorporation service](https://asomerit.com/hong-kong-incorporation) before preparing for a bank application.

## Can Non-Resident Directors or Beneficial Owners Apply?

Non-resident status alone should not be the reason an application is rejected. HKMA's customer due diligence FAQ states that account-opening applications should not be rejected merely because the customer is incorporated or established offshore, or because the beneficial owners or directors of a corporate customer are non-residents.

That statement does not mean an application will be approved. The bank still applies its own onboarding and customer due diligence procedures.

A non-resident applicant therefore faces the same core questions as any corporate customer: who owns and controls the company, why the account is being opened and what activity is expected through it.

## What Banks Need to Understand During KYC

Corporate account opening is part of customer due diligence (CDD). The bank needs enough information to identify the customer, understand the corporate structure and understand the intended banking relationship.

### Beneficial ownership and control

HKMA's FAQs state that, under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Ordinance and the related guideline, banks are required to identify and take reasonable measures to verify the identity of the beneficial owners of corporate customers. The bank must also be able to understand the company's ownership and control structure.

Where ownership runs through several entities, the bank will need to follow the chain to the individuals who ultimately own or control the company. The supporting evidence for that chain should follow the selected bank's current requirements.

### Purpose of the account and expected activity

HKMA's anti-money laundering guideline requires banks to obtain information on the purpose and reason for opening the account, unless that purpose is self-evident. Banks also develop an understanding of the customer's normal and expected banking activities for ongoing monitoring.

An applicant should be ready to explain the company's business model, why a Hong Kong account is needed and how the account is expected to be used. The explanation should match the company's actual structure and activity.

### Source of funds and source of wealth

Under the same guideline, ongoing due diligence includes identifying the source of funds where necessary.

Source of wealth is not a universal requirement. HKMA's customer due diligence FAQ states that collecting source-of-wealth information ordinarily applies to higher-risk situations. What a bank asks for depends on the circumstances and on its own procedures.

## What Documents May Be Requested?

The selected bank's current requirements determine the document list. No single checklist applies to every Hong Kong bank.

A bank-specific example helps when it is labelled as such. HSBC's business-account guidance states that supporting documents vary for different business types and typically include company registration documents and identification documents for relevant persons, such as authorised signatories and beneficial owners.

In one scenario on its business account page, HSBC lists additional evidence: shareholder bank statements, a related company's business licence and bank statement, evidence of the ultimate beneficial owner's industry experience, and a business plan naming potential buyers or suppliers. These are HSBC examples for that scenario, not a Hong Kong checklist.

A practical way to prepare is to organise documents by purpose:

- documents that establish the company and its current status;
- information that explains ownership and beneficial ownership;
- identity information for the persons relevant to the application;
- evidence that explains the company's business; and
- information that supports the intended use of the account.

The documents within each category should be confirmed against the chosen bank's current checklist.

## Is In-Person Attendance Required, and Can an Account Be Opened Remotely?

HKMA's customer due diligence FAQ of 25 May 2017 states that the presence of two or more, or all, directors or beneficial owners at the time of account opening is not required by the HKMA. The statement concerns multiple or all directors and beneficial owners attending together. Each bank still sets its own procedures, which may include identity verification in person or by video.

HSBC offers one example of a remote route. Its materials state that eligible customers can complete the account-opening process remotely, while other cases may involve an account-opening appointment or a video conference. This eligibility is specific to HSBC and its current criteria; it does not indicate what another bank offers or how another applicant will be treated.

An applicant comparing banks should ask each one two questions:

1. What does the bank require for this company and the people connected to it?
2. Does the bank currently offer a remote, video or appointment-based route for this applicant?

## How to Prepare Before Applying

The ownership information, business explanation, intended account use and supporting documents should all describe the same company and activity.

1. **Confirm the company's current status and ownership structure.** Identify the directors, shareholders and beneficial owners relevant to the application.
2. **Prepare a concise explanation of the business.** State what the company does and why the account is being opened.
3. **Describe the expected banking activity realistically.** Banks develop an understanding of normal and expected activity for ongoing monitoring.
4. **Prepare source-of-funds information where relevant.** Source-of-wealth evidence is not required from every customer.
5. **Check the chosen bank's current document list.** Requirements vary, and one bank's examples do not apply to another.
6. **Confirm the onboarding route before planning travel.** The bank may use a remote, video or appointment-based process under its own procedures and eligibility criteria.
7. **Ask the bank about timing.** HSBC's own guidance notes that each bank has its own procedures and timings.

## What Asomerit Can and Cannot Do

Asomerit supports the preparation and coordination side of Hong Kong corporate bank account opening. The service covers banking-route review, KYC document preparation, application coordination, appointment steps, provider communication, follow-up questions and additional document requests. Where a payment platform fits the business model, Asomerit also supports platform applications. A payment platform is not a traditional bank account.

For route selection and application support, see Asomerit's [Hong Kong corporate bank account opening service](https://asomerit.com/hong-kong-bank-account-opening). For how a Hong Kong company fits alongside a Mainland China operating entity, see [Hong Kong company vs China WFOE](https://asomerit.com/blog/hong-kong-company-vs-china-wfoe).

## Sources and Currentness

- HSBC Hong Kong (bank-specific examples only): A quick guide to opening a business bank account in Hong Kong (14 August 2025); Business Integrated Account page (checked 30 September 2026).

Bank procedures and eligibility criteria change. HSBC examples should be checked against the bank's current instructions at the time of application.
